The hidden struggle for country kids...
______________________________________________
Country Australia can be an incredible place to grow up. The connection to the land, and the resilience and resourcefulness present in these communities is something to be admired.
However, the remoteness and isolation can be challenging – especially for children needing health and developmental support. Receiving timely developmental and health support can be difficult, with up to 80% fewer allied health professionals — such as occupational therapists and psychologists — available in small rural towns than in metropolitan area.
As a result, children in remote and very remote areas are almost twice as likely to start school developmentally vulnerable than children in major cities.
Meet Max, who started school with a speech and language disorder, making his kindergarten school year difficult and isolating. Usually, a naturally confident and warm child, he withdrew into his shell – both in his classroom and on the playground.
Had he been unable to access support, Max would have fallen further behind other children his age in terms of his reading, writing and social skills.
If this had continued into adulthood, these challenges could easily have snowballed – affecting Max’s mental health, limiting his job opportunities, social connections, and making him susceptible to ongoing disadvantage.
That’s why, with the support of generous donors like you, Royal Far West invests in the future of country children like Max – helping them access the services and support they need as early as possible, so they can thrive throughout their lives.
Don't let distance get in Max's way.
A life in the country is a life beyond the ordinary.
But for country kids, facing developmental and mental health challenges, isolation and distance can make it hard to access the specialist help they need.
Royal Far West is dedicated to going beyond for Australia's country kids, providing vital supports where and whenever it’s needed.
To reach every country kid who needs us, we need you.
